Zou-no-hana Terrace will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2019.
The Zou-no-hana district is where Commodore Perry of the United States first landed when he arrived in Yokohama for his second visit to Japan, on March 31, 1854. Ever since Yokohama was designated as one of the 5 open treaty ports according to The Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and the United States, this area became the first fully open port in Yokohama, and also an important commerce location where people actively traded with various countries.
150 years have passed since then, and as part of the commemorative event for the 150th anniversary since the opening of the port, the birthplace of the Yokohama port, “Zou-no-hana”, was transformed into the “Zou-no-hana Park”. A wide and spacious square was built on a green hill with a view of the sea and port. The mood of a port town can be felt from the Nihon-odori that runs near, and the “Zou-no-hana Terrace” was constructed within this space as a rest house that could also be used as an art space. Just like how foreign and Japanese cultures met when the port first opened, various people as well as cultures came together and linked. Ever since, it has frequently held various cultural programs of art, performing arts, and music in order to become a spot where new cultures are able to emerge.
Today it is often used as a resting place for office workers during their lunch breaks on weekdays, and also people of the city such as couples or families who spend time to enjoy their days off.
As a commemorative event for its 10th anniversary, the Zou-no-hana Terrace will hold a new art project in order to continue being loved by the people, and also to become an even more comfortable and relaxing place.
We will be seeking for ideas that we would like to have remaining in the next year/ 10 years/ 100 years, and also presenting a “Public Space Project” that will exhibit a “Futurescape” that reflects the people’s visions at the Zou-no-hana Park.
This project aims to bring together and realize the individual creativities of artists and people of the city. We look forward to your participation.
After application deadline, screenings will be conducted to confirm whether the submitted ideas meet the application conditions. Then the selection will be carried out by the project team of this event (Zou-no-hana Terrace-Yokohama City-Project Partner). The selected ideas will be exhibited/ performed from June 7-June 16, 2019 at the “Zou-no-hana Terrace 10th Anniversary Exhibition”.
